Description

The following letter has made its way into the possession of everyone who is anyone in the Ruhrort Sector. It is passed through the grimy hands of dockworkers until it reaches crime bosses, Lord-Captains of the greatest Dynasties read it over breakfast, Magi absorb the information within in their inloaded data, while the Interrogator-Adepts of the Inquisition include it in morning briefings for their Inquisitors.

My dearest fellows,

It is with the greatest of sadness that I must announce my forthcoming departure from this plane of existence and the beginning of my great journey through the Sea of Souls to sit at the right hand of the God-Emperor. Aggressive chronoblastosis the Genators say. A result of too many poorly shielded warp jumps as a youth and utterly incurable. I have perhaps nine months at most with the most advanced therapies available.

Some of you I am sure would seek to cheat death via the perfidious tools of the xenos or the heretic, but I have long served the God-Emperor and I will not deny him his due. A thousand die each day to ensure that I might have the pleasure to sail the void, who am I to cheapen their sacrifice?

This of course brings me to the foremost subject of this missive; in accordance with the charter laid down between Callithus, Keris, Rabenschwarz, Veritas, Fandaris and Wulff I summon a full convclave of the Council of Arkangel. The meeting to be held on the planet of Peravis at or around 0200873/M41 all are invited to share in the bounty of Arkangel, to trade for mutual profit and to compete for glory.

I will not be among you then, with my passing I leave a void in the Council that must be filled as I have no children and my Dynasty dies with me. Accordingly I place my seat on the Council as prize for the one who is declared first among the Rogue Traders of this Expanse. It has been too long without new blood in our august body and I believe that the presence of a new voice will bring some interesting changes.

For those of you who will squabble over the remainder of my possessions, I have left a few entertaining surprises among them. For those of you who treat my passing with dignity and grace, you have my thanks and my blessing.

Ave Imperator

(signed)

Dominicus Callithus, 4121872/M41

Anyone who has any interest in the void or the Rogue Trader Dynasties will be aware of the Council of Arkangel. Arkangel itself is a former Ramilles class star fortress that was used as a forward fleet base during the crusade, but was reduced to ruins following a successful strike by the forces of the Archon. Five years later, it was claimed by a trio of Rogue Trader Dynasties as legitimate war salvage, in accordance with Imperial Law (as it had remained unoccupied and unclaimed by the Adeptus, the Navy or the Guard, beyond the boundaries of the Imperium), vast quantities of bribes were poured into the Admiralty Courts, but eventually the claim was upheld – the navy did not have the resources to repair the structure anyway. In conjunction with several outspoken radical Arch-Magos the Dynasties repaired the warp bubble generator (a lost item of archeotech that is irreplaceable) and invited the collective Rogue Traders of the then-Expanse to tow the station through the warp to a point beyond what is now known as the Line.

Today, Arkangel is a hive of scum and villainy, the default ‘Mos Eisley’ port of our setting where Rogue Traders launch their endeavours into the void in search of profit. It is beyond Imperial Law and within the opulent ruins of its spires, vile xenotech and high art exchange hands for sums beyond the dreams of the scum who crawl around its docking rings looking for berths on a vessel.

Arkangel is ruled by a council of the wealthiest and most glorious Rogue Traders in the Sector and new admissions to the Council (currently consisting of six individuals) are so rare as to be non-existent. But persistent rumours indicate that the Council is in fact larger than those six individuals, that the Mechanicus and the Inquisition have seats on the Council.

Meetings of the Council are held on planets far from Arkangel and are accompanied by a vast display of wealth and competitions between the gathered Rogue Traders of all Dynasties who seek to gain the attention and recognition of their peers.

This coming year is different, of course, the Council will appoint one individual from among the gathered Rogue Traders to join their number, which has not changed since the Council was formed. To be selected is to be recognized as among the foremost Dynasties, which in turn makes the new Councillor both an asset and a target. The precise selection process has not been announced, but it is well known that at every other Council meeting the planet chosen has been both dangerous in the extreme and a site of extreme wealth, it is likely that a combination of the largest bribe and a demonstration of collective skill will win the day.

Any queries should be directed to the usual ST address.
