Every event has a “Background” which is a theme to determine it’s content, plot, look and feel. The background is based on whatever the organiser has decided, whether it’s historical, based on a TV show/book or completely original fiction.
In preparation for an event, participants are asked to familiarise themselves with any background information so that they can create a fitting character and costume. Knowing the background also helps participants to act out their character, to avoid unsuitable references (e.g. talking about superheroes at a viking event) and to understand what is going on during the event.
